Just In Case: Keeping an Eye on Your School's Web Presence
So far, we've covered arrangements designed to ensure safe and responsible school use of social media. These arrrangements, together with internet safety training and practical experience in school, are already reducing the incidence of inappropriate use. By developing knowledge of safe practices in school, students are learning how to use these tools safely in their personal lives.
We know, though, that out-of-school use of social media by students can still sometimes lead to in-school problems. If this is an issue for your school, you may want to keep an eye on new mentions of your school on the public web. This is being done by some schools as a way of catching potential problems early.
How can you do that? There are various ways. Probably the simplest is to use Google Alerts. This is being successfully used by some East Lothian schools. Here's all you need to do:
- Specify your search term: for example, use "Bash Street Primary" (in quotes) to find mentions of that phrase
- Choose the scope of the search: you'll probably want to choose "comprehensive", but you could limit the search to just blogs, for example
- Choose how often you want alerted: this can be as-it-happens, daily or weekly
- Provide an email address to receive the alert email messages
